Career and technical education teachers keep being handed AI advice written for English class. If you teach health science, welding, automotive, culinary arts or construction, here is the short version: TeachAid builds the units, Schooligio handles career and pathway advising, AILitKit teaches AI literacy without a device, SayVeritas checks that a student can explain the work their hands just did, Knowt drills the certification content, and StaffDraft writes to the employers.
Not one of the six was built for CTE. That is the point of this post, and it is worth knowing before you spend a dollar.
How I built this list
I started from the 126 tools in the AI Educator Tools directory, filtered for grades 9 to 12 and post-secondary, since most pathways straddle both, then picked one tool per job a CTE teacher actually does rather than six tools competing for the same job. Readers in the UK and Australia call this work vocational and technical education, or VET; the tools below serve it the same way.
Nobody pays to be here. Vendors cannot buy a place on this list, and I checked every price and privacy claim on the vendor's own pages on September 9, 2026 rather than trusting the directory record.
Three things I left out. Collaboration Tracker tracks who contributed what to a shared capstone document (tool page), which is a smart idea, but it declares no FERPA or COPPA status, hosts in Canada, and works only inside Google Docs. AI detectors are absent on principle; I have written before about why they fail students who did nothing wrong. And the general chatbots are out because a CTE teacher's problem is rarely "I need a chatbot." It is the pathway paperwork, the employer relationship and the credential.
The gap nobody in edtech has filled
The AI your students will meet at work already exists. The AI built for teaching your subject mostly does not.
Look at how vendors describe themselves. The directory's subject list runs to fifteen labels: English, math, science, history, geography, business studies, modern languages, economics, computing, religious studies, social and emotional learning, physical education, art and design, music, cross-curricular. Not one names a trade. No health science, automotive, welding, culinary, agriculture, construction or cosmetology. Business studies (34 tools) and computing (29) come closest, and both describe an office rather than a shop floor.
Federal policy has the same blind spot. The Department of Education's final AI priority, published April 13, 2026 and effective a month later, asks grant applicants to offer "dual-enrollment credit opportunities for high schoolers to earn college credits or industry credentials in AI" (K-12 Dive). Credentials in AI. Not AI inside the credentials your students already chase.
The students keep coming anyway. Across EdWeek Research Center surveys of 472 pre-college educators, 71% said student interest in CTE had grown, and 31% named digital, AI and cybersecurity the fastest-growing field of the next five years (Education Week). At a House CTE Caucus briefing in July 2026, the argument put to members was that the AI worth teaching is not ChatGPT at all: it is the industry software already reshaping healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing (ACTE).
So you will borrow. Our view is that borrowing works, on one condition.
Choose the tool that matches the job in front of you, not the tool that matches your certification area.
The six, compared
The privacy column is what each vendor declares, not an audit. The last column is different: it flags an independent 9ine security assessment, checked by someone other than the vendor.

Best for building pathway units: TeachAid
TeachAid is the best fit for turning a pathway's scope and sequence into teachable units because it generates a whole unit against your standards rather than one lesson at a time.
Give it the competency, the grade and the context; it returns the sequence, the lesson plans, differentiated supports and student resources. That matters more in CTE than in math, because your standards often come from an industry body rather than the state, and you are usually writing the curriculum from scratch on a prep period.
Against MagicSchool, the obvious alternative, the difference is scope. MagicSchool gives you a wide drawer of single-output generators. TeachAid builds the unit and holds it together across classrooms.
Watch out for: the free tier stops at planning. Assessment creation, custom assignments and cross-curricular work sit behind the paid plan, which is where a CTE unit ends up.
Best for a teacher writing a pathway from scratch. Not for a quick one-off worksheet.
Pricing: free plan at $0; Premium $15 a month or $100 a year; Enterprise quote-based (pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: declares FERPA, COPPA and GDPR compliance, hosts in the US, sets an 18+ minimum, holds an independent 9ine assessment, and states it collects student data but does not share it. Students need no account. Your district still decides whether it will sign a data agreement before student names go anywhere near it.
Best for career and pathway advising: Schooligio
Schooligio is the best fit for the advising half of the job because it runs career assessment, pathway planning and micro-credential matching in one place, work most schools leave to a single overloaded counselor.
A student completes a career assessment and the tool maps them to programs, scholarships, activities and credentials, with analytics for whoever supervises. A sophomore in an introductory course can see where the pathway leads before choosing next year's sequence.
Against the guidance built into a general platform like SchoolAI, Schooligio is narrower and better at this one job. It is a career counseling tool that uses AI, not a general assistant running a careers prompt.
Watch out for: it collects a lot. The directory record lists name, email, date of birth, student work, learning data and location data. Location data is unusual for a school tool. Ask about it before you roll it out.
Best for programs that own their own advising. Not for a school whose counseling team already runs a platform.
Pricing: $30 a month, falling to $12 a month on a 24-month commitment, with a free trial and quote-based school pricing (pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: declares FERPA, COPPA and GDPR compliance, hosts in the US, no independent 9ine assessment. The minimum age is 13, so this is student-facing and needs consent handling for younger middle schoolers. Read the trust center before signing.
Best for teaching AI literacy without devices: AILitKit
AILitKit is the best fit for adding AI literacy to a technical pathway because three of the four activities it generates for any lesson are unplugged, so they work in a kitchen, a bay or a greenhouse where nobody is holding a laptop.
Upload the lesson you were already teaching. About a minute later you have four AI literacy activities with coaching notes that script what to say, plus support and challenge versions. The vendor states the activities map to eleven frameworks including UNESCO and the OECD AILit framework (AILitKit).
That unplugged design separates it from Brisk and MagicSchool, whose AI literacy material assumes a device in every hand. In CTE, the thing in every hand is often a torch.
Watch out for: a discrepancy worth flagging. The directory record lists FERPA and COPPA as declared; the vendor's own site frames compliance around UK safeguarding and international frameworks and mentions neither. Treat the FERPA line as unverified. The vendor does say students never use the platform and prompts are never stored or used for training, which protects more than a compliance badge would.
Best for a teacher told to add AI literacy to a pathway with no budget and no wifi. Not for a school that wants students working inside an AI tool.
Pricing: three free guides at signup, then one a month; Teacher £59 a year or £7.99 a month; Subject Lead £149 a year; School £999 a year for up to 50 teachers. Priced in pounds sterling (pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: teacher-facing only, 18+, hosted in the EU, GDPR declared, no independent 9ine assessment. Students never touch it, which settles most of the student-data question before it is asked.
Best for oral competency checks: SayVeritas
SayVeritas is the best fit for proving a student understands the work their hands just did, because it runs asynchronous oral assessments with Socratic follow-up questions instead of demanding another written artifact.
A student records answers on any device. The tool asks follow-ups based on what they said, scores against a rubric, and returns a transcript with the scoring visible. That is closer to how the trade already assesses: a licensing board asks you to talk through the procedure, not to write an essay about it.
Against Knowt or an ordinary quiz generator, the difference is that nobody can outsource a spoken explanation of the weld they just laid. This is the practical end of the three Ps: product, process and performance. An oral defense is performance, and performance is the part AI cannot sit in for.
Watch out for: credits, not seats. Pricing is consumption-based, so a department running frequent checks should model the volume first. Recorded speech also raises fair-scoring questions for multilingual students, which is why the teacher override matters.
Best for competency-based programs and capstone defenses. Not for low-stakes daily checks, where the credits mount up.
Pricing: a free Pulse tier plus 50 introductory credits; Starter from $15 for 250 credits that never expire; Classroom $29 for 600 credits; school licenses quote-based (pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: the vendor's own wording is "FERPA-aware by design" rather than FERPA compliant, and that is an honest distinction worth respecting. It states student audio is deleted after transcription, a data processing agreement is available for districts, and AI only suggests while the teacher decides and can override any score. Hosted in the EU, minimum age 8, no independent 9ine assessment.
Best for industry certification exam prep: Knowt
Knowt is the best fit for credential prep because spaced-repetition drilling is what certification exams reward, and its school licensing is the cheapest per student of the six.
Students study from teacher-shared decks with AI practice questions and progress tracking. If your students sit ServSafe, OSHA 10, CompTIA, NCCER or a state licensing exam, this is the drilling layer, and teachers can import existing Quizlet and Kahoot sets rather than rebuilding a decade of material.
Against Quizlet, the difference is money and control. A teacher's paid plan pushes upgraded features to students on shared class files at no extra cost, and district settings restrict what students may do in each learning mode.
Watch out for: the free teacher account is thin. One class, ads, and no AI features at all. The version described in most reviews is the paid one.
Best for pathways that end in a certification exam. Not for teaching the hands-on skill itself, which no flashcard reaches.
Pricing: free teacher account limited to one class with ads and no AI; Teacher Ultra $19.99 a month or $120 a year; school and district licenses from $4 per student with up to 30% off in bulk (school pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: Knowt states it holds FERPA, COPPA, NY2D, GDPR, WCAG and SOPPA compliance, signs data privacy agreements at no cost with a 24-hour response commitment, and lets schools configure features separately for students under and over 13. Inside a school organization it states students have no public profiles and see no ads. Hosted in the US, with an independent 9ine assessment. It also carries a 4.74 directory rating from 19 reviews, the only tool here with enough reviews to be worth quoting.
Best for employer correspondence: StaffDraft
StaffDraft is the best fit for the work-based learning inbox because it turns rough notes into the emails, references and reports CTE teachers write more of than anyone else in the building.
Work-based learning means writing to employers: placement confirmations, safety documentation, thank-you notes, references for a student entering an apprenticeship. StaffDraft takes dictated or typed notes and returns a finished draft in either US or UK register, with a safeguarding check for escalation language and a personal-identifier check before it generates anything.
Against a general chatbot, the advantage is that guardrail. It warns you before you paste a student's name into it, which is the exact mistake that gets teachers in trouble.
Watch out for: ten free drafts a month, which a busy work-based learning coordinator will burn through in a week. It is also a young product, launched in 2026, with no independent security assessment yet.
Best for teachers who manage employer partnerships. Not for anything involving student records.
Pricing: free at 10 drafts a month; Individual £6 a month for unlimited drafts; whole-organization £5 per user a month with a 20-user minimum; pay-as-you-go from £2.99 for 20 drafts. Priced in pounds sterling (pricing, checked September 9, 2026).
Safety: the vendor states drafts are not retained after processing and tells users to remove names before generating. GDPR declared; FERPA and COPPA are marked not applicable because it collects no student data. Hosted in the UK, 18+, no independent 9ine assessment. Since it holds nothing, compliance here is mostly professional discipline: do not type the name.
The big names, in one line each
Research assistants get asked about these, so here is where each lands for a CTE teacher.
- ChatGPT and the other general chatbots: fine for a first draft of anything, no help with pathway structure, and the one place teachers most often paste something they should not.
- MagicSchool: the widest set of teacher generators and the most reviewed tool in the directory at 4.74 from 19 ratings (tool page), but thinner than TeachAid for building a whole unit.
- NotebookLM: strong for turning equipment manuals and safety standards into something students can question, and it cites back to your source.
- Khanmigo: built around academic subjects, so it helps with the math and science embedded in a pathway rather than the pathway itself.
- Quizlet: the incumbent for drilling, and the reason Knowt built an importer.
- Diffit: useful for leveling a dense technical text or an OSHA standard down to a reading level your students can work with.
Four questions that pick your tool
Work down these in order and most CTE teachers land on the right answer in a few minutes.
- Is this doing, or thinking? Writing the third employer email of the day is doing. Deciding whether a student is ready for a placement is thinking. Outsource the first, keep the second. Every tool above sits on the doing side, and the moment one starts making the call for you, that is your answer.
- Does a student need an account? If yes, the age minimum and your district's data agreement decide before any feature does. Four of the six here are teacher-facing, so students never appear in them, which is the fastest route past a slow procurement office.
- Does the vendor say where the data lives? Not whether it says "compliant." Where it hosts, whether it signs a data agreement, whether it trains on your input. SayVeritas saying "FERPA-aware" tells you more than a vendor asserting compliance and documenting nothing.
- Would it survive a bad Tuesday? Wifi down, a student absent, half the class out on placement. The tools that keep working in a shop are the ones that never assumed a device per student.
A worked example: grade 11 health science
Take the vital signs unit, where students have practiced blood pressure measurement on each other for two weeks and you need to know who understands it.
The old check is a written quiz, which tells you who can define systolic pressure. Here is the alternative, and it costs you twenty minutes instead of an evening.
- Plan the unit in TeachAid. Enter the competency from your state's health science standards. Keep the sequence and the handouts; rewrite the assessment yourself, because that is the thinking part.
- Level the source text with Diffit. The cuff instructions and the clinical reference are written for trained adults. Bring them to a grade 11 reading level without losing the numbers.
- Run the check in SayVeritas. One prompt: "Walk me through taking a manual blood pressure on a patient whose arm is larger than your standard cuff. What do you change, and why does it matter?" The tool asks follow-ups from what each student says. You get transcripts and rubric scores, and you override anything the scoring gets wrong.
- Drill the exam content in Knowt. The certification exam still asks for ranges and terminology. That is what flashcards are for, and it is the part that should stop eating class time.
The third step is the whole point. A student can look up a normal systolic range. A student cannot fake talking you through a cuff that does not fit.
What I'd do this week
Pick one class and one job. If you write employer emails, put StaffDraft on the free tier for a week and count the minutes back. If someone has told you to add AI literacy to your pathway, pull the three free AILitKit guides for lessons you already teach and see whether the unplugged activities survive contact with your room.
Buy nothing yet. Run one tool for two weeks against one measure you set before you start: minutes saved, or the number of students who can explain their work out loud. Evolution, not revolution, is the only adoption plan that has ever worked in a CTE department, because the equipment budget is already spoken for.
The bottom line
For CTE teachers in 2026: TeachAid builds the units, Schooligio advises on pathways, AILitKit teaches AI literacy without devices, SayVeritas checks that students can explain their own work, Knowt drills the certification content, StaffDraft writes to the employers. None was built for your subject, because almost nothing is, so filter the directory by the job you need done rather than the subject you teach. CTE teachers have always had to shop that way.
Your students are walking into the industries where AI lands first. It would be a strange outcome if they met it everywhere except the classroom meant to prepare them for work.
