Just over half of American teenagers now say they have used a chatbot for schoolwork, and one in ten say they do all or most of it that way. Those are Pew Research Center figures from a survey of 1,458 US teens in autumn 2025, and I doubt a single reader here finds them surprising. The question I get from parents and high school teachers is no longer "should students use AI to study?". It is "which ones, and which ones will quietly do the studying for them?"
This post answers that. It is for teachers and parents of students aged roughly 14 to 18 (sixth form and GCSE or A level students, for UK readers) who want a shortlist they can hand over with a clear conscience. It is not a list of ways to finish homework faster; ChatGPT is free and you already know where it is.
How This List Was Built
I started with the 90 tools in the aieducator.tools directory and the 28 of them tagged as student-facing and suitable for high school, then judged each on five things: does it help a student learn rather than just produce work, is there evidence of use in real classrooms, what is its safety posture (FERPA, COPPA, minimum age, where it hosts data), is the pricing honest, and does it keep the thinking with the student. Nobody paid to appear here, and vendors cannot buy a place on the list or in the directory.
I left out two tools that would have made the cut on features. One shares student data with third parties and lists its GDPR status as in progress; the other does not state where it hosts data and declares no GDPR compliance. Neither is necessarily unsafe, but I am not recommending a tool to a 15-year-old when the vendor has not answered those questions. General-purpose chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and NotebookLM are not ranked because they are not in the directory, and because a general chatbot will write the essay if asked. NotebookLM earns a mention anyway: teachers in our community name it more than any other student-facing tool, mostly for turning a student's own notes into quizzes and study guides.

By the numbers
The directory data tells a story vendor blogs do not. Of the 90 tools listed, 25 set a minimum user age of 18, which means a high school student cannot legally hold an account under the vendor's own terms; a further 24 require users to be 13 or older. Of the 50 tools tagged for high school, 11 still say adults only, so they are teacher-operated tools, not study tools. Of the 28 student-facing high school tools, 15 declare FERPA compliance and 12 declare COPPA compliance, 3 say they share student data with third parties and 7 do not say either way. Only 2 of the 28 (Knowt and EnlightenAI) hold an independent 9ine security assessment. If you are choosing a study tool for a teenager, those numbers are the ones to read first.

Best for AP, SAT and IB prep: Knowt
Knowt is the tool I would put in front of a high school student first, because it does the widest range of useful things and it is the only one on this list with an independent security assessment behind it.
A student pastes notes, uploads a PDF or records a lecture, and Knowt turns it into flashcards, practice questions and summaries. It runs spaced repetition, imports Quizlet and Kahoot sets, and sits on a library of more than five million study resources covering AP, SAT, IB and GCSE courses.
Where it beats Quizlet, the tool most students already use, is the school controls. A district can switch AI and sharing off for under-13s and on for over-13s per site, Knowt signs a data privacy agreement at no cost, and ads disappear for students once it is signed. Those are the details that get a tool approved.
Watch out for two things. The plans page does not publish the AI caps on the free Basic tier, so a student who leans on the AI features will hit a wall and be asked to pay. And the library is user-generated, so quality runs from excellent to wrong; a stranger's flashcards are a draft to check, not a source to trust.
Best for students preparing for exams with a lot of factual recall. Not for a student who wants a conversational tutor.
Pricing: Basic is free and covers notes, flashcards and the free study modes. Ultra is $24.99 per month, or $149.99 per year (works out at $12.49 a month). School and district licences start at $2.75 per student, with teacher licences included (verified 5 September 2026).
Safety: FERPA and COPPA declared, plus New York Education Law 2-d and SOPPA badges on the vendor's school pricing page; no minimum age, with under-13 controls handled by the school; data hosted in the US; independent 9ine assessment held; GDPR declared.
Best for facts that must stick: Brainscape
If the job is memorising a lot of material for a high-stakes exam, Brainscape's confidence-based repetition is the most disciplined way to do it.
After each card the student rates their confidence from one to five and the algorithm decides when it comes back: low-confidence cards return quickly, high-confidence cards drift away. The AI creates cards from pasted or uploaded material, and a teacher dashboard shows who has studied and who has opened the app once.
What sets it apart from Knowt is focus. Brainscape has been doing one thing since 2010 and does it well, where Knowt is trying to be a whole platform. Compared with Anki, the free tool serious students swear by (not in the directory, so not ranked here), Brainscape is far easier to live with on a phone.
Watch out for the ceiling. It is a flashcard tool, full stop: it will not explain a concept the student does not understand, and the free tier's AI card generation is capped. There is no independent security assessment on record.
Best for vocabulary, formulae, dates, definitions and anything else that has to be recalled cold. Not for essay subjects or for a student who needs the why explained.
Pricing: Basic is free forever, with unlimited typed cards, spaced repetition, progress tracking and AI generation of "100s" of cards. Pro is $7.99 per month billed annually. Group licences for schools are custom-priced with up to 70% off the consumer rate (verified 5 September 2026).
Safety: FERPA and COPPA declared; no minimum age; data hosted in the US; collects name, email and performance data, and states it does not share with third parties; GDPR declared.
Best for studying by explaining: TikoNOte
TikoNOte is the tool on this list that most closely matches how I think students should study: it makes them explain the material, then shows them where the explanation broke down.
It is built on the Feynman technique. The student uploads notes or a PDF, then explains the topic back in plain language, and the AI finds the gaps, the hand-waving and the bits memorised without being understood, then asks follow-up questions. It also does "blurting" (write everything you remember, then compare it to the source), mind maps and flashcards, but the explain-it-back loop is the point.
That loop is what sets it apart from every flashcard tool here. Flashcards test recognition; explaining tests understanding, and it is very hard to fake. It is the closest thing on this list to what I mean by cognitive stretch: the amount of thinking a task still asks of the student after the tool has done its part. TikoNOte's part is to listen and probe. The student's part is everything else.
Watch out for the pricing structure. The weekly plan costs roughly the same as a year on Brainscape and is designed for exam-week panic buying. The company is young (established 2025), there is no teacher dashboard, and the directory lists its data deletion as "on request" rather than self-service.
Best for students who can recall facts but freeze when asked to explain them, and for essay subjects generally. Not for a school looking for a whole-class platform.
Pricing: Free to download with a limited allowance of AI study tools. Unlimited access is $9.99 per week, $19.99 per month or $59.99 per year through the iOS app (verified on the App Store listing, 5 September 2026). Buy the year or nothing.

Best AI tutor that will not write the essay: Bloom AI
Bloom AI is the tutor to choose when you want a student to be able to ask questions at 10pm and still be the one doing the work in the morning.
A teacher or school builds a Teaching Space, uploads the course materials, and Bloom's tutor answers within them, using Socratic questioning and hints before it gives anything away. The vendor's FAQ puts it plainly: Bloom "won't do students' work for them, like writing their essays or completing assignments on their behalf", though it will share an answer when that helps learning. Teachers get analytics on what students asked and where they struggled.
What sets it apart from SchoolAI is grounding. SchoolAI's Spaces are led by the teacher's prompt, with resources attached if wanted; Bloom's whole design is anchoring the tutor to the course documents, which matters when a student is revising a specific syllabus rather than a general topic. What sets it apart from asking ChatGPT is the guardrail, which the student cannot switch off.
Watch out for two things. Data is hosted on Google Cloud in Australia by default, with other regions available on request; a US district's data privacy agreement will need to ask for that. And a student cannot set Bloom up alone: it needs a teacher or institution to create the Space, so it is a school decision, not a personal one.
Best for schools that want a safe tutor for a specific course, and for teachers who want to see what students are confused about before the lesson. Not for a student studying independently without a school account.
Pricing: Free plan covers up to 3 staff and 30 students per Teaching Space, with 50 advanced-model messages per user per week and 10 knowledge base documents. Educator Plus is $12 per month billed annually. Growth plans run from $120 to $2,000 per month billed annually for 30 to 500 students. Enterprise is custom (verified 5 September 2026).

Best for school-issued, teacher-monitored use: SchoolAI
SchoolAI is the right answer when the question is "how do we give every student a tutor and still see every conversation?", and the wrong answer when a student is choosing a tool for themselves.
Teachers create Spaces: bounded AI experiences with their own instructions, guardrails and standards alignment. Students chat inside them and the teacher sees every exchange in real time, with safety alerts if a conversation goes somewhere it should not. It integrates with Google Classroom and Clever, and the directory carries a 4.92 average from 13 reviews alongside a SchoolAI community thread.
What sets it apart from MagicSchool, its closest rival, is the monitoring. Both let teachers build student-facing rooms; SchoolAI's live visibility of student chats is the feature that turns a safeguarding worry into a teaching opportunity, because the teacher sees the misconception while it is happening.
Watch out for the free plan. Since July 2026 it allows five Space launches per teacher per year, which is a trial rather than a tier, and the Pro and Scale plans are only sold to schools and districts with no public pricing. The directory also records that SchoolAI shares data with third parties, which is worth raising in procurement.
Best for departments and districts that want student AI use inside a fence. Not for individual students, and not for a teacher expecting to run it free all year.
Pricing: Free plan with five Space launches per year and most PowerUps. Pro and Scale are quote-based through a school or district purchase; no public pricing (verified 5 September 2026).

How to Actually Choose
Three questions sort this list for any student, and they are in order of importance.
Who holds the account? Read the age terms first. A tool that says 18+ is not a study tool for a 16-year-old, however good it is, and 25 of the 90 tools in the directory say exactly that. For anything school-provisioned, FERPA applies; for anything a student signs up to alone, the vendor's privacy policy is the only protection there is.
Where does the thinking happen? This is the rule I give every school I work with: outsource the doing, not the thinking. In studying, the doing is making the flashcards, formatting the notes, scheduling the reviews. The thinking is recalling, explaining, connecting and checking. Knowt and Brainscape automate the doing and leave the recall to the student. TikoNOte and Bloom go further and make the student do the explaining. A tool that produces the summary and the answers has taken the thinking too, and a Common Sense Media survey published in August 2026 found that 39% of teens already feel they are missing out on learning when they use AI to complete assignments. They know.
Who can see the data? Prefer tools that state where they host, whether they share with third parties, and that will sign a DPA with the school. A blank is not a red flag, but it is a question, and the security assessments page lists which vendors have let an independent party check.
A study tool that hands over the answer has done the student's studying for them. The one worth paying for is the one that makes the student produce the explanation.
Two rules for departments. If your students already live in Quizlet, move them to Knowt and turn on the school controls; you lose nothing and gain a DPA. If you are choosing between Bloom and SchoolAI, pick Bloom for a single course with a fixed syllabus and SchoolAI for whole-school rollout where monitoring matters more than grounding.
What I'd Do This Week
Pick one class and one upcoming test. Have every student build their own Knowt or Brainscape deck from their notes rather than downloading someone else's, then spend the last ten minutes of two lessons on the TikoNOte routine without the app: each student explains one concept to a partner, who notes the moment it got vague. Compare the test results with the last set. If the explaining moved the needle, you have found where the tool belongs. If not, you have lost twenty minutes and learned something anyway.
The Bottom Line
For most high school students, Knowt is the one to start with: the widest free tier, an independent security assessment and school controls that make it approvable. Brainscape for pure memorisation, TikoNOte for the student who needs to learn to explain, Bloom AI when a school wants a tutor with guardrails, SchoolAI when it wants to watch every chat.
