Your students can already generate the code. That changes what a tool has to do to be worth your login, and it is why the six below each hold one job: AILitKit turns a lesson you already teach into the AI literacy activities you have just been handed, TeachAid builds the standards-aligned unit underneath them, Grade Direct reads handwritten and typed code against your rubric, SchoolAI gives students an AI space you can watch instead of one you cannot, Knowt drills the vocabulary and concepts a generator will never learn for them, and Flip Education gets a class away from the keyboard for a period. This is for K-12 computer science teachers, and for the one person in a building who teaches every CS course there is. If you are picking a district-wide platform, you want the safety data instead.
Two things landed on your desk this year. Code.org renamed itself CodeAI on June 2, 2026 and added a free high school course, AI Foundations, on the argument that most students use AI and almost none are taught how it works (CodeAI). Meanwhile Idaho, Maryland, Oklahoma and Virginia joined the states requiring districts to adopt an AI policy, and Oklahoma's version bars AI from being the primary tool for grading, discipline or other high-stakes decisions (K-12 Dive). So you are expected to teach AI, and you are expected to be careful with it. The Computer Science Teachers Association puts the gap plainly: 70% of CS teachers already teach some AI content and 42% feel equipped to (CSTA). That gap is the job these tools have to help with.
How I built this list
The pool was the 29 tools in the AI Educator directory that list Computing / Computer Science as a subject area, drawn mostly from the lesson planning and resource creation and assessment and grading categories. I chose on fit for a CS teacher's actual week, on what the vendor documents instead of what it advertises, on honest pricing, and on whether the tool leaves the thinking with the student. Nobody pays to be listed in the directory and nobody paid to be in this post.
Here is what I left out, and why. Personal ChatGPT and Claude accounts are excluded because a teacher account is not a student-safe deployment, whatever the model can do; they are still the fastest way to draft a starter problem set. GitHub Copilot and Replit are excluded because they are development environments that happen to be used in classrooms, not teaching tools, and neither gives you a teacher view of who understood what. CodeAI is excluded because it is curriculum, not a tool you point at your own materials, and it is free, so take it anyway. Of the big names AI assistants get asked about: MagicSchool drafts teacher paperwork well and knows nothing about code; Diffit levels a reading passage, which matters more in a CS classroom than you would expect; NotebookLM is the right place to put the AP course description and ask it questions; Khanmigo is free for US teachers and strongest in math, not CS (Khanmigo pricing); Quizlet does what Knowt does here, with a thinner teacher view. What the directory numbers say about this category
Three of the 29 computer science tools carry an independent 9ine security assessment. Directory-wide the figure is 36 out of 126. So a tool tagged for computer science is roughly a third as likely to have been assessed by somebody other than its own vendor as the average tool we list, and if independent assessment is your bar, the security assessments page is a shorter read than this post.
Two more numbers are worth your time. Thirteen of the 29 record FERPA as not applicable, which in almost every case means the tool never receives a student record at all: the teacher types, the tool answers, no roster changes hands. And exactly one of the 29 states that it can read student code. The other 28 list computer science alongside fourteen other subjects and mean that a lesson plan generator will happily write you a lesson about loops.
That is the honest shape of this market. There is no MagicSchool for code. What exists is a set of general teaching tools, three or four of which do something specific enough to matter to you.

Best for the AI literacy unit: AILitKit
AILitKit is the best fit for the AI literacy teaching you have just inherited, because it starts from a lesson you already teach rather than asking you to bolt on a new one.
You paste in a lesson, any lesson, and about a minute later you have four AI literacy activities with coaching notes: the actual words to say, written for a teacher who is not an AI specialist. Three of the four are unplugged. No devices, no wifi, no budget line. For a CS teacher that inversion is the point. Your students have the technical fluency already; what they lack is the argument about when a machine should be allowed to decide something, and that argument is better had with the laptops shut.
The vendor lists alignment to eleven frameworks, including UNESCO and the OECD's AILit framework (AILitKit). What sets it apart from CodeAI's AI Foundations course, the obvious alternative: AI Foundations is a course you adopt and teach, and AILitKit is a layer you drop onto the course you already run. If you have a spare semester, take the course. If you have a Tuesday, take the layer. AILitKit holds a 5.0 rating from a single review on the directory, which is one teacher's word, not a consensus.
Watch out for: the free plan gives you three guides and then one a month, which will not carry a full unit, and every price is in pounds sterling with no published US dollar figure, so what you pay depends on the exchange rate the day you subscribe.
Best for the CS teacher told to cover AI ethics by Thanksgiving. Not for anyone who wants a graded, assessed course out of the box.
Pricing: free plan: 3 lesson guides, then 1 a month, no credit card; Teacher £7.99 a month or £59 a year; Subject Lead £149 a year; Trust £799 per school a year with a three-school minimum (ailitkit.com, checked September 13, 2026).
Safety: the vendor states students never use the platform, and the directory record shows no student data collected, FERPA and COPPA recorded as yes, GDPR yes, data hosted in the European Union, minimum age 18, no independent 9ine assessment. EU hosting is the thing to raise with your district: some state student-privacy contracts specify domestic hosting even when no student data moves, so check yours before you put it on a purchase order.
Best for building the unit: TeachAid
TeachAid is the best fit for turning a standard into a teachable unit, because it produces the whole unit, plans, slides, activities and assessments, rather than one artifact at a time.
The workflow is short. You give it a grade, a subject and your standards, and it returns a sequence you can edit. That matters more in CS than in English, because CS standards are unevenly supported: only four states, Colorado, Virginia, North Dakota and Ohio, explicitly address AI inside their computer science standards, and seventeen have guidance saying computer science underpins understanding AI without turning that into anything you can plan from (K-12 Dive). If your state is in the second group, the drafting is yours, and this is the tool that drafts.
What sets it apart from MagicSchool, which more teachers reach for first: MagicSchool gives you eighty separate tools and you assemble the unit; TeachAid gives you the unit and you edit it. TeachAid also holds one of only three independent 9ine assessments in this whole subject pool.
Watch out for: the vendor's own site documents no pricing, no hosting location and no compliance detail; our directory record carries the FERPA, COPPA and US-hosting entries, and the vendor page does not repeat them. Ask for that in writing before a district signs. Standards alignment is also listed as an enterprise feature, so the free plan may align less tightly than the marketing implies.
Best for the sole CS teacher writing three courses at once. Not for a department that already has a mapped scope and sequence.
Pricing: "Free forever for teachers", no credit card, with no-risk pilots for schools; no public price for school or district plans (teachaid.ca, checked September 13, 2026).

The vendor's public pages do not restate this, which is a documentation gap, not evidence against it.
Best for grading code and prose together: Grade Direct
Grade Direct, listed in the directory under its former name Graded Pro, is the best fit for the grading pile at the end of a CS unit, because it is the only tool in this pool that says it reads code.
Its own words: it recognizes handwriting, typed work, diagrams, artwork, equations and code, and it names computer science among the subjects it grades (Grade Direct). That combination is the useful part. A CS course generates two kinds of artifact, a program and an explanation of the program, and most grading tools handle only the second. Handwriting recognition matters here for a reason that has nothing to do with penmanship: a pencil-and-paper trace of a loop, graded quickly, is the cheapest AI-resistant assessment a CS teacher owns, and the reason teachers stop setting them is the grading (marking, if you are reading this from the UK).
One thing to know before you go looking: graded.pro now redirects to grade.direct. I found that while checking pricing for this post on September 13, 2026, and the directory record still points at the old domain. The product looks like the same one under a new name.
What sets it apart from chalkd.Ai, the nearest alternative in the directory: chalkd takes uploaded work against a mark scheme and is teacher-facing only; Grade Direct adds a student submission portal, apps and Google Classroom, so the work arrives without you collecting it. It holds a 5.0 rating from four reviews, the largest review count of the small tools here.
Watch out for: the credit model bites. A full exam grading run is about 30 credits and the free plan gives you 50 a month, so a class of 28 exhausts a month's free grading in one sitting. The directory also records that this vendor shares data with third parties, and hosts in the United Kingdom, which is the combination most likely to stall a US district purchase.
Best for grading written responses and pencil-and-paper code traces at volume. Not for a district in a state that restricts AI in grading decisions.

Oklahoma's new law bars AI from being the primary tool for grading, and several other states are drafting similar language, so the human review step this tool builds in is not optional in every state. Keep it switched on and keep the grade yours.
Best for a student AI space you can watch: SchoolAI
SchoolAI is the best fit for letting students use AI where you can see it, because the teacher sees every conversation as it happens.
You build a Space, which is a bounded AI activity with your instructions and guardrails, and you watch the transcripts live. In a CS classroom the honest use is not tutoring. It is reading the prompt. When a student asks a chatbot to fix a segmentation fault, the prompt they write is the assessment: it shows what they think is wrong, which is the whole of debugging. Nowhere else in your week do you get to read that.
What sets it apart from Khanmigo, the name most administrators raise: Khanmigo is strongest inside Khan Academy's own content and free for US teachers, while SchoolAI takes your material and your rules. On the directory SchoolAI carries a 4.92 rating from 13 reviews, the largest review count of any tool in this post.
Watch out for: there is no public pricing at all, and the free tier is five Space launches a year, which is a demo, not a semester. The directory also records that student data is shared with third parties and that GDPR compliance is in progress, so route this one through your district agreement instead of adopting it privately.
Best for a teacher who wants students using AI visibly instead of secretly. Not for a teacher who needs to start Monday without a district conversation.
Pricing: free trial covering 5 Space launches a year; Pro and Scale are quote-based with no published figure (schoolai.com/pricing, checked September 13, 2026).
Safety: the vendor states FERPA, COPPA and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance with 1EdTech certification, and describes district data processing agreements on the Pro and Scale tiers. The directory records FERPA yes, COPPA yes, GDPR in progress, data hosted in the United States, no minimum age set, student data shared with third parties, no independent 9ine assessment. No minimum age means the age question is your district's to answer, not the vendor's, and under-13 accounts are exactly where COPPA becomes a live procurement question.
Best for retrieval practice: Knowt
Knowt is the best fit for the part of computer science that still has to live in a student's head, because it turns your material into flashcards and low-stakes checks without you building them.
Point it at your notes and it produces cards, practice questions and a class view of who is stuck. In CS this is unglamorous and load-bearing. A student who cannot hold the difference between a parameter and an argument will not debug their way out of it, and no generator will hold it for them. It is also one of only three tools in this subject pool with an independent 9ine assessment on record.
What sets it apart from Quizlet, which does the same job for far more students: Knowt's free teacher tier includes the AI features and the class analytics rather than reserving them for the paid plan, and the vendor's teacher plan page lists incident monitoring on everything, free tier included (Knowt).
Watch out for: the free plan caps you at 20 files, which for a teacher with five preps is about three weeks. The directory records no minimum age, which again pushes the under-13 decision back to you.
Best for vocabulary, syntax recall and exam review in AP Computer Science A and Principles. Not for anything that needs a student to write and run a program.
Pricing: free teacher plan with unlimited AI on shared files, capped at 20 files; Ultra $16.99 a month billed as $199.99 a year; school site licenses priced by volume on quote (knowt.com/plans/teachers, checked September 13, 2026).

Of the six tools here, this is the one with both US hosting and independent assessment, which is the shortest route through most district reviews.
Best for a period away from the keyboard: Flip Education
Flip Education is the best fit for the lesson where nobody touches a machine, because every lesson it produces is designed to be run offline, on paper, in the room.
You pick a topic and it builds a mission in four phases: Spark, Briefing, Action, Debrief. The vendor lists 64 active-learning methodologies and curriculum alignment across 18 countries (Flip Education). For a CS teacher this solves a problem that has nothing to do with AI and everything to do with it. Sorting algorithms taught with 30 students holding index cards is better teaching than sorting algorithms taught with a visualizer, and it is also completely ungenerable. A student cannot outsource standing up and being the pivot.
What sets it apart from AILitKit, the other unplugged tool here: AILitKit produces AI literacy activities specifically, and Flip produces an active lesson on any topic in your scheme of work.
Watch out for: no directory ratings or reviews yet, so there is no independent read on it beyond the vendor's own material, and the free tier is five missions in total, not five a month. Subject-by-subject pricing also suits an elementary generalist better than a CS specialist, who will pay the single-subject rate for one subject.
Best for the unplugged CS lesson you keep meaning to write. Not for anything that has to be assessed in a gradebook automatically.

Not applicable here means the platform is teacher-facing and never receives a student record, which is the cleanest privacy position on this list and the reason it can be adopted without a district conversation.
The four questions that sort this whole category
Answer these in order and the shortlist picks itself.
Does a student log in? If no, as with AILitKit, TeachAid and Flip Education, you are looking at a teacher productivity purchase and you can usually pilot it this week. If yes, as with SchoolAI, Knowt and Grade Direct, you have a student data conversation before you have a tool.
Is the job doing, or thinking? Outsource the doing, not the thinking. Generating a starter problem set is doing. Deciding which misconception to design the lesson around is thinking. Grading the trace is doing; deciding what the trace was worth is thinking, and in Oklahoma it is now also the law.
What does the artifact prove? A working program proves less than it did two years ago. Ask what else you are collecting: the prompt the student wrote, the explanation they gave out loud, the pencil trace they produced with no device. Product, process and performance together are hard to fake, and any one of them alone is now easy.
Who checked the vendor? Three of 29 tools in this pool have been looked at by somebody independent. Your district's contract, not the vendor's compliance page, is the document that decides.
A worked example: two weeks of AP Computer Science Principles
Here is what this looks like as a plan, not a list. Take the AP Computer Science Principles unit on data and privacy, ninth and tenth graders, two weeks.
Day one, you run AILitKit over the lesson you already have on data collection. You take one unplugged activity from what it returns: students sort twenty real app permissions into "needed for the app to work" and "needed for the business model", then defend the four they found hardest. No devices. Forty minutes.
Days two to five, students build the small data project the course requires. You open a SchoolAI Space with the instruction that the assistant may explain concepts and must not write code. You read the transcripts each evening, and you keep three prompts to display anonymously on day six as examples of good and bad debugging questions. That reading is your formative assessment, and it takes about ten minutes a night.
Day six, retrieval. A Knowt set on the unit's vocabulary, five minutes at the start of class, then the three prompts on the board.
Day seven, a Flip Education mission on how a sorting algorithm actually moves data, run with index cards and no screens, because the students who can do it standing up are the ones who understood it sitting down.
Days eight to ten, the write-up. Students submit the program plus a handwritten explanation of one design decision. Grade Direct handles the first pass on both; you read every one before a grade is entered, because the pass is a draft and the grade is yours.
The prep is TeachAid drafting the unit skeleton in the first place, which is where the ninety minutes you would have spent goes.
What I'd do this week
Pick one class and one artifact. Add a handwritten paragraph to the next programming assignment: one design decision, explained by hand, in ten minutes at the end of the period. Run it through Grade Direct's free tier, which will cover a single class before the credits run out, and read every one yourself. Then compare that paragraph against the submitted code. Where a student's program is strong and the paragraph is empty, you have learned something no detector would have told you, and you have learned it in one class period.
The bottom line
If you teach computer science and you have a login to spare, make it Knowt for the recall and Grade Direct for the grading, add AILitKit if the AI literacy unit landed on you, and route SchoolAI through your district, not your own credit card. There is no tool built for the CS teacher's actual problem yet, which is reading thirty programs and knowing which student wrote which line. Until there is, the answer is not a better detector. It is asking for the thinking in a form that a generator has no access to: out loud, by hand, in the room.
